why do I need this? jomsocial can change the profile url by default...

The one in Jomsocial lets you have a URL like this:

ProfileURL lets you have it like this:
Quote:

www. simbunch.com/mike_feng

You can select where you want to show the profile link on the profile, without having to edit profile to see and update it. It also works exactly like on Facebook, which gives your users familiarity (like the auto suggestion functionality)

Only profiles. Groups URLs is a good suggestion though. Maybe in the next major update :)
